What is Not a Tourist About?
I’ve traveled a lot during my life, mostly in the US. Most of my travel has been for business purposes – going to academic conventions, presenting research, networking.
I enjoy photography and have taken a lot of pictures during my travels. Now as I sort through them, I find myself reflecting on all the places I’ve been. I think the the photos tell a story that is more than simply reminding me of my trip, so these are the stories I am sharing with you here.
After looking over several of photos I took on my trips, and after my recent visit to a third-world country, I realized that I did a lot of my travel without being a tourist. This travel was for my career, going to conferences, and other business or activities besides sight-seeing. Since I’ve traveled more than 91,000 miles for conferences, and over 24,000 miles for other “non-tourist” trips (yes, over 115,000 miles total, plus a few other weekend “vacations”), I thought I should record a little of what came from all that. (I don’t even want to think about all the time I spent in airports waiting.)
My lessons and memories from these trips came because I was not really a tourist. Also, there were places I could not be a tourist, and these probably made the deepest impressions.
This blog tells my stories: sharing memories, insights, lessons, or just weird things that happened. It is not really a guide for travelers, but you could pick up some suggestions that may help you when you get the opportunity to travel.
On my earlier trips I did not have a camera, so any images I share are from my mental recollection. From later trips I can share the visual images as well through my photographs. But the stories I tell here are so much more than photos and can never be captured by photos.
I hope I paint a good mental picture for you to enjoy in these stories. Thanks for reading, and I’m open to any feedback.
